Military

Take off in formation, fly low, navigate by terrain—Ukraine’s F-16 trainees finished a UK course Russia helped design. RAF instructors said the trainees’ aircraft handling was solid from the first 10 sorties, with the months-long course shaped by jamming realities on the front line.

Russia wanted a 9 May ceasefire. Kyiv announced one starting earlier. Russia killed a woman in a kindergarten, and hit 1,820 times. The Ukrainian Air Force said it had downed or jammed 89 of the drones. Nine drones, two ballistic missiles, and one air-launched missile struck eight locations across the country.

Ukraine hit VNIIR-Progress in Cheboksary — plant behind GPS components in Russia’s Shaheds and glide bombs. The plant manufactures “Kometa” adaptive antenna arrays. Without them, Russia’s precision weapons become significantly less precise.

Mobilization gap: Russia now losing more troops than it can replace, for fifth month running. Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov calls it the “mathematics of war”, and it is turning decisively against Russia.

International

China asks Ukraine to treat Chinese POWs well, but doesn’t say if it wants them back. Chinese MFA spokesman invoked international law on the two Chinese citizens captured fighting for Russia, while sidestepping the question of whether China is acting to repatriate them.

US approves potential sale of JDAM-ER joint direct attack munitions to Ukraine. The US State Department has approved a potential $373.6 mn sale of 1,532 JDAM-ER kits to Ukraine. Boeing will serve as the principal contractor for the deal.

FP: Patriot supplies to Ukraine hinge on the war in Iran, which has already drained nearly half of the US stockpile. Foreign Policy reports US officials see Ukraine as unable to last two days without aid, as the Iran war drains the Patriot stockpile and clouds the PURL program.

Humanitarian and social impact

Russia is making military training a mandatory school subject in occupied Donbas. Kyiv asks the ICC to act. “Cossack classes” enter the curriculum on 1 September. Ukraine’s ombudsman calls it a crime against humanity—and says international silence is complicity.
