Huawei Mate 80 Pro in for review

The Huawei Mate 80 Pro isn’t a drastic change, specs-wise, to its predecessor, but makes one giant improvement in comparison – it’s a globally available phone.

And while the rollout is gradual, you can already order the phone in Malaysia with more markets joining soon. So let’s look at it.

The Mate 80 Pro is a pretty phone. Its design certainly has more character than that of its predecessor. You’ve got Huawei’s signature circular patterns on the back – there’s a MagSafe-like golden circle under the actual camera island circle, which hides a smaller circle with the XMAGE label inside.

Then, on the screen, some of the preloaded wallpapers have circles on them too. It’s an interesting look.

The sides of the phone are glossy, while the rear is matte. Ours is the Gold model, but there are also Black and Green (and a White in some markets).

Like its predecessor, the Mate 80 Pro has a main camera with an f/1.4 to f/4.0 variable aperture lens. Rumors are that the next iPhone Pros might adopt this as well.

The sensor itself is not too shabby at 1/1.28-inch. There’s also a pair of 40-something megapixel cameras for ultrawide and zoom shots. One is a 13mm f/2.2 autofocusing unit, and the other is a 93mm f/2.1 zoom.

Overall, it sounds like a promising triple setup. Upfront is a 13MP selfie with an almost ultra-wide 18mm f/2.0 optic.

The SoC is a 6nm Kirin 9030 (Pro on the higher-tier storage/RAM models, non-Pro on the base Mate 80 Pro). The new chip isn’t on the cutting edge of mobile silicon, but Huawei is making quick improvements in the chip department ever since it lost its US-based tech privileges. We can’t fault the performance of the Mate 80 Pro for the majority of tasks.

Where things haven’t improved in a major way is the battery – the Mate 80 Pro has a 5,750mAh power pack compared to the 5,500mAh of its predecessor. The charging speeds are also unchanged, though still impressive – 100W wired, 80W wireless, 18W reverse wired, and 20W reverse wireless.
