The Rise of Movie-Themed Online Casino Games in the UK

Whether it’s a romantic comedy or an action hero, there is a movie niche for everyone. Some movies hit home so much that you can’t help but watch them again, especially when they have a sequel. Movies with sequels and record-breaking blockbuster hits often end up being rehashed into games or online casino games.

The early days of movies crossing paths with the casino industry

This is tough because there are tens of thousands of slots, and the same goes for movies. Luckily, we know some experienced online slot players who have been playing at UK casinos for years, and they just so happen to also be movie fanatics. Some of the first movies to become online slots were Tomb Raider and Hitman, released between 2004 and 2008.

Tomb Raider (Paramount Pictures)

Tomb Raider is famous for its female adventurer, Lara Croft, played by Angelina Jolie. The original movie hit the box office in 2001, followed by a sequel in 2003. Warner Bros Pictures also released a 2018 version with Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. Yet, at that time, two online slots were already circulating the UK online casino market.

  • Tomb Raider (2004 slot release)
  • Tomb Raider Secret of the Sword (2008 slot release)

The Hitman (20th Century Fox)

The Hitman (2007 slot release) is another online slot based on the 2007 movie starring Timothy Olyphant, who was Agent 47.

These early movie-themed online slot games were originally available through the Microgaming casino game software provider, but now Games Global distributes them. However, be warned: They are outdated, so not all UK casinos feature them.

Mad Max (Kennedy Miller Productions)

As movies evolved into online casino games, most were Hollywood productions. However, Kennedy Miller Productions is an Australian movie studio famous for the Mad Max film released in 1979. In 2023, Australian software provider Aristocrat decided to bring back the old popular movie of old, which still airs on Netflix and other streaming channels. There are now two versions of the online slot available in the UK.

  • Mad Max Fury Road (2023)
  • Mad Max Fury Road Megaways (2023)

Alice in Wonderland (Walt Disney)

A more recent reiteration of a well-known movie into online casino games comes from the fairy tale Alice in Wonderland. The original animated version of the film dates back to 1951 before Walt Disney brought the story back to life in 2010. The film, directed by Tim Burton and starring Jonny Depp, became a cult hit and naturally attracted the attention of online casino firm Playtech.

Several slot releases have been based on the story, movie, and live casino games.

Adventures Beyond Wonderland (Playtech)

This live casino game takes the story of Alice in Wonderland and plays out on a giant Wheel of Fortune live casino gameshows. There are four bonus rounds, and players can win up to £500,000 in a single bet.

Online Slots Based on Alice in Wonderland

There is no shortage of software providers creating Alice in Wonderland slot titles. Two of the most recently released slot titles are:

  • Alice in WildLand: SpinPlay games released this slot in 2021.
  • Alice in Vegasland: Wizard Games release this slot title in 2023.

Jurassic Park (Universal Pictures)

Before Microsoft sold its casino games distribution business to Games Global, the software provider had made several deals with Universal Pictures.

One of those deals involved the Jurassic Park franchise, which brought the popular movie to the UK online casino scene. Fortunately, the agreement with Universal Studios remained in place when Games Global took over Microgaming’s B2B casino game distribution network. The software provider also holds a UKGC license to provide B2B casino games services to UK online casinos.

These well-structured deals allow UK casino enthusiasts to play two Jurassic Park online slot games.

  • Jurassic Park (Released in 2014)
  • Jurassic Park Gold (Released in 2021)

This is probably not the end of the series, either. As the Jurassic Park franchise continues to plan for more new releases, we’ll likely see Games Global release a third online slot title.

Sony Pictures and Playtech

You may not have heard of Playtech if you are not a regular online casino player. Yet, this is a huge company and one of the UK’s largest online casino entities. It is a London Stock Exchange PLC and regularly appears in financial news headlines.

As for Sony Pictures, this is a company well-known in the movie industry and needs no introduction. Sony is responsible for the Breaking Bad franchise and recently.

Playtech already has a deal to distribute the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire franchise as an online slot game, which was extended in 2024. Also, Playtech made an agreement with Sony Pictures to release a Breaking Bad online slot title.

  • Breaking Bad Cash Collect Link: This is a Playtech Origins slot studio production released in December 2023. The game has a Cash Collect & Link feature that gives you a shot at winning four fixed jackpots.

Playtech Cash Collect Link Movie-Themed Slots

  • Robocop Cash Collect Link: Playtech made a deal with MGM Studios.
  • Gladiator Mega Cash Collect Link: This slot title was released after an agreement with DreamWorks Pictures.
  • The Walking Dead Online Slot Series: There are three slots based on the famous Walking Dead series created by Playtech. The Walking Dead, The Walking Dead Cash Collect, and The Walking Dead 2.
