Hurricane Fiona hit Puerto Rico the day before and reached the coast of the Dominican Republic. The hurricane left without power the entire territory of Puerto Rico. It was accompanied by record rainfall – up to 1,000 mm (50 inches) fell in a number of regions. Winds reached 150 km/h (93 mph), with gusts up to 220 km/h (136 mph).
According to authorities, due to the hurricane, almost 12.5 thousand people were forced to leave their homes and take refuge in shelters. Two local communities are isolated due to blocked roads. Wind and fallen trees, as well as water flows, damaged three thousand buildings, including about 2.5 thousand residential buildings, four bridges and three aqueducts. The largest public hospital in Puerto Rico is now running on generators, and in some medical centers they are out of order.
Puerto Rico’s Emergency Commissioner Nino Correa warned of the possibility of landslides and flooding.
The hurricane is forecast to intensify to Category 3 or higher. On Tuesday, it passed near the Turks and Caicos Islands, and there is a possibility that it will threaten the US mainland.
